His most notable work at NASA was on the Curiosity rover, which is currently on the surface of Mars.

His YouTube channel gained millions of subscribers from viral science-related videos, but his name became much more well-known when he teamed up with the most trending YouTuber at the time, MrBeast, on a fundraiser to plant 20 million trees (#TeamTrees).

Mark Rober has had multiple TED talks, been publicized in Men’s Health, and appeared on numerous occasions on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Personal Life

Mark Rober does an excellent job of keeping his personal life personal. The only information available is what Mark releases himself.

We do know that he currently resides in Sunnyvale, California, is married to Lisa Rober, and has a son.

As he shared in one of his videos, his son has autism, and a great deal of Mark’s work has been focused on drawing awareness to autism, as well as fundraising for various charities that research Autism.

One of these charity events, Color the Spectrum, was done with his friend Jimmy Kimmel and raised over $3.3 million for NEXT for AUTISM.

Career

Being quite a bit older than most popular YouTube creators, Mark Rober didn’t set out initially to be a YouTuber. But once he took his engineering and inventive brain onto the platform, he had tremendous success.

But before we can look at his success on YouTube, let’s look at his career beforehand.

NASA

After graduating from the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA in 2004 in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

He spent 9 years at NASA, 7 of which were spent working on the Curiosity rover, which is now on Mars.

He was involved in several projects but was one of the primary architects for “JPL Wired,” a comprehensive knowledge capture wiki.

YouTube

In 2011 Mark Rober started his YouTube channel and found immediate success on the platform. With an engineering background and an understanding of creating engaging content, Rober is a perfect fit for the platform.

His most popular video to date has gained over 120 million views and shows off a cool party trick you can do in 10 minutes with a watermelon.

Other videos go over a lot more scientific things, all the way to environmental fundraisers.

Digital Dudz

Very early in his YouTube career, in his first video, Mark Rober created a Halloween costume using an iPad that made it look like he had a giant hole in his torso.

This video went viral and was picked up by many news companies.

Seeing the massive opportunity, Mark set up a company named Digital Dudz that created these digital Halloween costumes, which did very well for him. Generating around $250,000 in revenue in its first three weeks of operations.

After two years, Mark Rober sold the company to UK-based costume company Morphsuits.

Scammers And Thieves

Some of Mark Rober’s most successful videos on YouTube come from his glitter bomb videos to help catch porch pirates.

None of these bombs were dangerous, but they did a good job marking and deterring potential package thieves.

In his follow-up to the viral video, he teamed up with Home Alone actor Macauley Caulkin which helped the video get even more attention.

In addition to package thieves, Mark has devoted quite a few videos to help to educate people about various scams and how to avoid them. For example, his carnival scam video.

Apple

While creating viral videos, Mark was moonlighting over at Apple… Or was he moonlighting on YouTube while working at Apple?

For five years, Mark Rober worked as a product designer in Apple’s Special Projects Group.

He was involved in VR and self-driving vehicles and authored several patents in these areas.

In 2019 though, he left Apple to focus entirely on his YouTube channel, which has seen explosive growth.

#TeamTrees

In the second half of 2019, Mark Rober teamed up with MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) to raise $20 million by January 1st, 2020, to plant 20 million trees.

All donations were sent to the Arbor Day Foundation, which promised to plant one tree for every $1 donated.

By the end of December 2019, over $23 million was donated, far exceeding the initial goal. The Arbor Day Foundation pledged to plant one tree for each dollar donated, and planting began at the end of January 2020 and was completed by the end of 2022.

The fundraiser was supported by many top YouTube creators, like PewDiePie, Jacksepticeye, the Slo-Mo guys, Marques Brownlee, Linus Tech Tips, iJustine, Dude Perfect, Jeffree Star, and more.

In addition to creators and their fans, entrepreneurs and tech companies also jumped on board, with Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, Susan Wojcicki, Verizon, EA, Shopify, etc., making large donations.

#TeamSeas

The follow-up to #TeamTrees was the #TeamSeas fundraiser two years later and had a similar goal in mind, also started by both Mark Rober and MrBeast.

The campaign stated that it would remove 30 million pounds (14 million kg) of marine debris from the ocean by removing one pound of debris for each $1 given.

All the donations for this fundraiser would be split between the Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Cleanup.

In a similar event to the #TeamTrees campaign, YouTubers from around the world joined in, with large companies also showing their support for the initiative.

The fundraiser ultimately succeeded, surpassing their initial goal of $30 million, with around $32.5 million currently raised.

Revenge Of The Nerd

It was announced that in 2020 Mark Rober and Jimmy Kimmel would be releasing a video prank show on the Discovery channel.

As of yet, it has not aired, presumably due to the pandemic causing delays.

The show is planned to be released on the Discovery channel sometime in 2022 under the name “Revenge of the Nerd,” but it has yet to be launched. New scheduling suggests it will be released in 2023.

Kimmel and Rober intend to search the world for troublemakers, then exact their revenge in the form of over-the-top pranks that will be recorded on hidden cameras.
