When she alleged in 2017 that the FBI was investigating her, she became a household name. 

According to Tana, someone had accessed her Gmail account and emailed a bomb threat to a US airport from her account. For the past five years, her YouTube career has been bolstered by a series of controversies.

Biography 

Tana Marie Mongeau, an American YouTuber, was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 24, 1998.

Her parents are Richard Mongeau and Rebecca Mongeau, and she is an only child.

Her father owned and operated a successful pool-cleaning business while Mongeau was growing up. Her mom has stayed away from the spotlight, and there is not much known about her. 

Early Life 

Tana revealed on the MTV show “No Filter: Tana Turns 21” that while she was growing up in Las Vegas, she had a difficult childhood since her parents did not have great parenting skills. 

However, even though she has previously discussed the tensions she has with her family, this was a particularly sensitive moment for the normally self-assured vlogger. 

Career 

Her “storytime” YouTube videos are consistently the most popular content that Mongeau puts out. 

According to a Snapchat post made by Mongeau on February 10th, 2017, she was under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after an email hacker delivered a bomb and firearm threat to the international airport located in Nevada, USA.

Prior to their breakup in June 2017, Mongeau was dating Somer Hollingsworth when she began her YouTube career and he appeared in many of her vlogs.

From the summer of 2017 to February of 2019, Mongeau was romantically involved with Bella Thorne, including a time when she, Thorne, and singer Mod Sun formed a trio.

Marriage to Jake Paul 

During the month of April 2019, Mongeau began dating another YouTuber and internet personality, Jake Paul. In June 2019, the pair announced that they were getting married, but many fans and pundits didn’t think it was real.

On July 28, that year, Paul and Mongeau said “I do” in a $500,000 Las Vegas wedding.

They didn’t get a marriage license before the ceremony, and the officiant was also not licensed by Nevada. As a result, the marriage did not have to be legal.

When Tana turned 21, the ceremony was recorded for MTV No Filter: Tana Turns 21. Fans could watch it for $50.

On an episode of the show, Mongeau said that the ceremony was “fun and lighthearted” and that it was “something we’re clearly doing for fun and for the show”.

Their breakup was later announced in January 2020. 

Music Career

Tana’s debut single was titled “Hefner” and was released in November 2017. The music video to the song featured another famous personality, Bella Thorne.

Later that month, Mongeau was also featured on the Maury show.

Dr. Woke and Lil Phag worked together to produce a song called “Deadahh” which was put out in December of that same year, via Mongeau.

Continuing with her music career, her next single “W” was released in early 2018. On August 31, 2018, she released a famous flop, titled “F*ck Up”.

Controversies 

There have been several controversies that Mongeau has been caught up in throughout her career.

Most notably the n-word controversy with iDubzzz and her TanaCon disaster. Read on to learn more about these two events and the aftermath of each. 

N-Word Controversy 

To date, “The N Word” by Mongeau has been seen more than 7 million times.

In reaction to a tweet Mongeau sent to YouTuber iDubbbz, threatening him to commit suicide because of his usage of the n-word in his videos, she says in the video that someone on her tour told her to say the n-word. iDubbbz was eventually confirmed to be the YouTuber in question. 

In response, iDubbbz recorded a video where he exposed Tana to her own hypocrisy by citing instances in which she had publicly used the n-word in a derogatory manner.

Mongeau apologized for using the slur in a video she released on February 17th, 2017.

TanaCon or Fyre Fest? 

Mongeau revealed in May of 2018, that she’d be conducting a separate convention, TanaCon, from June 22–23, in the same town and time as one of the most popular YouTube conventions; VidCon.

Mongeau created TanaCon as a competitor to VidCon after the organizers of VidCon refused to grant Mongeau the opportunity to be a “featured creator” during the convention. 

TanaCon was slated to be held starting June 22, at a Marriott hotel in Anaheim, California, and was subsequently canceled the very same day.

More than 80 content creators and celebrities, including Bella Thorne, Shane Dawson, Casey Neistat, Miranda Sings, Emma Chamberlain, Ricky Dillon, Elijah Daniel, Jenn McAllister, Gabbie Hanna, Trevi Moran, Jack Baran, and Lisa Schwartz, were scheduled to hold panels at the event. 

TanaCon Goes Downhill 

Despite Mongeau’s assertions that over 20,000 fans attempted to attend the event, only 4,000 to 5,000 people showed up at most, and the Marriott hotel could not even hold that many.

People who attended the event waited in line and complained they were not given any food or drink while they stood for hours in the blazing hot sun.

According to reports, attendees were severely sunburned and some even fainted due to the heat while waiting in line.

TanaCon drew much attention and a lot of condemnation for the lack of planning.

Multiple other reports said that fans started comparing the convention to the badly flopped Fyre Festival and started to chant ‘refund’ after the event was called off.

Shane Dawson later commented that agreeing to speak at the convention was one of the worst decisions he had ever made.

After the uproar had settled down, Mongeau did formally apologize to fans and committed to providing full refunds to everyone who had purchased tickets.

And while Shane Dawson may have thought TanaCon was a bad decision, he made content from the debacle afterward, creating a documentary of the convention.
